Mother’s Day Postcards!
Posted April 23rd, 2008 by catherine

Did you know that Native Women are nearly 3 times more likely to be sexually assualted than women of any other race in the U.S.? Or that there are only 3 women’s shelters on the Navajo reservation serving 180,000 people?

This Mother’s Day, WBB wants to raise awareness of violence against Native Women which is so often invisible, not only to mainstream American culture, but even in seemingly inclusive dialogues about domestic violence in the U.S. and other forms of violence against women generally.

In an effort to raise much-needed funds for these three women’s shelters, WBB is selling Mother’s Day postcards featuring orignial artwork by acclaimed local artist Joerael Elliott. For a mere $3, you can directly impact the lives of women and children surviving domestic violence. (Not to mention, the postcards are all printed on recycled paper with veggie-based inks :o)

Sponsored by LUNAbar and benefitting both Women Beyond Borders and the Breast Cancer Fund, LUNAfest films have won industry awards and audience accolades. The event went off without a hitch, raising nearly $800. Juarez Committee Update
Posted March 19th, 2008 by catherine

On March 13-16, five WBB members traveled to Juarez, Mexico to help finish constructing a handicraft center that is the primary source of income for many women in this impoverished community. Members Charis and Joerael generously purchased construction supplies to finish the one-room building’s roof and walls. Joerael, with the help of a lot of little children, also completed a mural featuring Subcommandante Marcos (at the special request of the cooperative’s members), which brings some welcome color to the center’s courtyard.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were also able to bring the center six sewing machines, and plenty of sewing supplies — both ofwhich they desperately needed.

Catherine, Andrea, Charis and Ashley met with cooperative members several times to develop a business plan and marketing strategy for the handicraft center, in the hopes that, with our help, the women will eventually be able to earn a living wage. WBB’s Juarez committees currently in the process of applying for grants that will help us continue to develop the handicraft center, and change the lives of women and families in this community.

Also, we’ve decided to name our Juarez Committee “Las Otra Hermanas” (LOH, for short).

The following pictures were taken by Ashley and Joerael:

“Armed & Langourous” a success!
Posted February 29th, 2008 by catherine

On February 23, Plaid Eatery’s art-festooned walls reverberated with the sweet, sultry sounds of our favorite bluesy songstresses, Meridith Moore (and company) and Garnet (of Dry River Yacht Club), and a few new faces too…We present the acoustic stylings of Nina Curri, the lyrical stylings of Nug~One *plus*

Our second annual pepper spray benefit concert, and second *ever* all female revue (appropriately entitled, “Armed & Languorous”) raised about $600 for our pepper spray project in Juarez.

100 percent of proceeds funded our second shipment of pepper spray and self-defense literature to Casa Amiga Crisis Center, which distributes them, for free, to women living and working in Juarez, Mexico (where, if you don’t know by now, more than 430 women and girls have been raped and murdered with impunity since 1993).
